Google Advertising

April 9, 2009 marks the date when Google will begin to roll out Interest-based advertising. The roll out will occur over time spanning the year 2009.

Our website offers Google Ad to users. These ads are chosen by Google based on the content of our webpage. Google controls the algorithm that selects the ads. In the past, these ads where chosen based on ad targeted keywords matching words within the page content. The assumption being that ads with the same target keywords would be of interest to the reader.

Google, in an effort to improve the user experience, has chosen to alter this algorithm in 2009. Google will not only supply ads based on target keywords but also based on the interests of the person reading the page. Google states, "Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to show ads based on a user's previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. "sports enthusiast"). To develop interest categories, we [Google] will recognize the types of web pages users visit throughout the Google content network. As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the "sports enthusiast" interest category."

What does this mean to the user?
We, and Google, expect that it means that you will see more ads that are of interest to you -- thus helping you find what you are looking for.

How will Google do this?
Google, as a third party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on our website. Google's use of the DART cookie enables it to serve ads to you based on your visit to our website and other sites on the Internet. Remember, a cookie is not a program, it cannot hurt your computer. The DART cookie simply stores a piece of information which can only be used by Google.

Can I Opt-out of interest-based ads?
Yes, You may opt out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the Google ad and content network privacy policy. This means that Google will NOT store the cookie on your machine and will not create interest categories for you.

Can I control my interests?
Yes, You can create and manage your Google interest profile online by altering your http://www.google.com/ads/preferences. You can also opt-in or opt-out on the ad preferences page.
