Is there such as thing as a Low Deductible HSA?

Technically, there is no such thing as a low deductible HSA, however I have and HSA and protect my family with a $100 deductible!

I personally have Assurant Health's OneDeductible PPO HSA account with a $10,000 family deductible. On-top-of-that, I have the added the SuiteSolutions optional coverage. This combination puts me in the driver's seat when it comes to my families health care!

There are two different options in SuiteSolutions

SecureSolution which offers:
  • Accident Medical Expense Benefit which offers between $2,500 and $10,000 per insured per accident and has a $100 deductible per insured, per accident
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit which offers up to $10,000 for the primary insured and up to $1,000 for the spouse and each child
  • Weekly Accident Indemnity Benefit which offers 70% of basic weekly salary to a maximum of $250 per week, for up to 52 weeks for the primary insured only


SelectSolution which offers:
  • Accident Medical Expense Benefit which offers between $2,500 and $10,000 per insured per accident and has a $100 deductible per insured, per accident
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit which offers up to $10,000 for the primary insured and up to $1,000 for the spouse and each child
  • Weekly Accident Indemnity Benefit which offers 70% of basic weekly salary to a maximum of $250 per week, for up to 52 weeks for the primary insured only
  • Critical Illness Expense Benefit which offers between $2,500 and $10,000 for teh primary isured and spouse. Covers life-threatening cancer, heart attack, stroke, paralysis, renal failure, coma, transplants and more.
  • Identity Network Child Safety Services Pre-registry of children using photos and descriptions
  • Identity Theft Benefit Up to $2,500 in financial relief, including reimbursement for related costs, lost wages, legal fees and expenses
  • Discounts Up to 60% off of services such as eyewear, contacts, hearing aids, acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation/relaxation, naturopathy, nutritional counseling, etc.



My Example:

As I mentioned above, I have the OneDeductible PPO HSA for my family with a $10,000 family deductible. I also have the SelectSolution with a $10,000 maximum benefit.

When my husband recently suffered a neck injury from a sporting accident. He felt bad that he would cost our family so much in medical fees just to find out how serious his injury was. He actually thought about not going to the hospital! I explained that I had chosen the SelectSolution optional coverage so that our $10,000 deductible is covered in the case of an accident or critical illness.

Well the total costs (ambulance, ER, X-rays) came to about $3,800. Without SelectSolution we would have been responsible for the entire $3,800 because we have had no ($0) claims this year. But with SelectSolution, our out of pocket was $100. SelectSolution paid the rest under our $10,000 Accident Medical expense Benefit.

Needless to say, my husband and I were both pleased that I had chosen such a comprehensive yet flexible plan for our family. We have all of the benefits of a High Deductible HSA Plan (tax breaks, flexibility in medical spending, low premium, etc.) with just a $100 deductible!
